Lava, Lichen, Leaves
Coconino N.F., Arizona
Flagstaff strikes me as a land of transition, where snowy peaks rise from a painted desert, and lush canyons cut through an arid plateau, to say nothing of its people. This scene, familiar to anyone who has hiked this land, shows segments of the succession of life: volcanic basalt, lichens, mosses, aspen groves. The fallen leaves remind me that we are forever in transition and the present, too, shall come to pass, as conifers outgrow the aspens, and fire bares the basalt again.
